About this publication

This publication provides coaches, teachers and swimmers with a series of tried and tested competitive backstroke drills and progressions.

These can be easily incorporated and adapted into any swimming training programme, whether you coach rookies or national swimmers.

Delivering the technical and physical demands of our sport

Competitive swimming is a gruelling sport, requiring swimmers to undertake many hours of repetitive training each week, in pursuit of excellence. For a dedicated swimming coach, developing a training programme that delivers the technical and physical demands of our sport, and at the same time adding variety and even a bit of fun to your sessions is an ongoing process that can be both difficult and time-consuming to achieve. Training programmes without fresh stimuli are in real danger of demotivating both swimmers and coaches alike.

About me

Over the past twenty-plus years as a head coach, coach and teacher, I have managed to collate a portfolio of competitive backstroke drills and progressions, which I have used to develop many young competitive backstroke swimmers to county, regional/state and national level, the best of which are published here.

Publication focus

This publication focuses on the stroke’s key technical and physical areas, each with its own dedicated chapter, breaking down the stroke into its key constituent parts, to help both the coach and the swimmer develop and maintain a great backstroke. These include:

body position | head position | shoulder and hip rotation | sculling | arm stroke | stroke counting | | leg kick | underwater dolphin kicking | speed development | starts | turns | finishes | warm-ups | cool-downs | recovery swims.

Swimming glossary

As there may be some regional and international variances in the swimming terminology used in this publication, I have included a swimming glossary in Chapter 14.
